John Uzzell Edwards
Painter and illustrator, born at Deri, Rhymney Valley, south Wales. Uzzell Edwards said that he “avoided art colleges”. Between 1962–70 he had studios and a studio gallery in Merthyr Tydfil and Tenby, while working as a technical illustrator. From 1967–8 he was Granada Arts Fellow at the University of York, the following year being spent at the British School at Rome. He began showing from the early 1960s, then participated in many group shows, notably at the National Eisteddfod, where in 1972 he won the Images of Wales competition and in the following year was a winner at Portraits of Welsh People. Solo shows included University of York, Clytie Jessop Gallery, Swansea Arts Festival, West Wharf Gallery in Cardiff and in 1991 Red Square Gallery.Â
