Simon Shepherd is a London-born artist, now based in Brighton. His work explores the distinctions between the familiar and the unfamiliar. He looks for and develops the beauty and aesthetic of the everyday object, and invites the viewer to reassess their expectations and preconceptions of it. A piece of work will often start with a familiar object which the artist finds to have some inherent beauty. He will then work to develop this, sometimes in a playful way, exploring the potential he sees within. An object may be juxtaposed with unfamiliar surroundings, creating incongruity which challenges the viewer to reconsider its aesthetic value.
